Learning Japan's four seasons through haiku

Japan has four distinctive seasons. Regardless of whether you've visited Japan or not, do join us as we journey through the four seasons of Japan.

	Spring A harbinger of spring, which is the season we’ll be featuring today. During the winter months of December, January and February, it’s very cold. Even in Tokyo, the temperature drops to anything from 5 to minus one degrees Celsius. 	Summer Today’s theme is “summer”.　In June in Japan comes the rainy season which is called Tsuyu or plum rain because it coincides with the ripening of the Japanese plum. 	Autumn Today’s theme is “autumn”. After the hot and humid summer months of July and August, it suddenly starts to cool down in mid September, marking the arrival of autumn in Japan. With temperatures of around 15 or 20 degrees Celsius，and with an refreshing breeze, it’s really a nice season. Autumn coincides with the rice harvest and it’s also a time when a wide variety of fruits and vegetables come into season, so autumn is often referred to as the season for hearty appetites. 	Winter Today’s theme is “winter”. Autumn in Japan lasts from around mid September to the end of November. It’s a pleasant season with crisp, balmy weather. But come December, the cold north winds start to blow. In Tokyo, the temperature falls to just over ten degrees Celsius. And in January it goes down to about five. Sometimes it snows in February. And when it does, everything looks so different, shrouded in a veil of pure white. It’s a whole new world. The snow helps to absorb sound, bringing about a sense of tranquility to the environment.
